Development of communication skills begins as early as infancy, way before the first word has been spoken. Any speech or language problem is likely to have a significant effect on the child's social, academic and behavioral development. The earlier a child's speech and language problems are addressed, the more likely they will have success in all areas of their development.
Language Disorder vs. Speech Disorder
Language is made up of socially shared rules that include the meaning of words, how to construct new words, how to put words together and when and how to use them appropriately. Whereas speech is the verbal means of communication consisting of how speech sounds are made, use of vocal folds and proper breathing to produce sounds and the rhythm of speech sounds.
